The Art and Movement of Conscious Living

About ten years ago, the buzz around next-day delivery, instant foods, fast fashion, fast cars, and basically instant everything enveloped society. The hustle culture brought about this neverending search for the fastest and the best.

But as the pandemic shocked the nation, every single one of us was forced to slow down and reevaluate our lives. Conscious, mindful, slow, intentional, sustainable… all of these different ways of describing a way of living that was entirely different from what we were used to suddenly were all over the news and social media. Who knew that a large-scale catastrophe would lead us back to the basics?

The ‘slow living movement’ has been around for quite some time now.

Dolce far niente

Literally translated as “the sweetness of doing nothing”, this Italian idiom and belief remind us that it’s okay to slow down. In fact, it’s more than okay. We are invited to breathe in every moment, every second of our lives as if it were the last. From slowly savouring every bite of freshly made pasta or drinking every drop of natural wine, it seems that the Italians got that right: there is beauty and magic in slowing down.

From slow to conscious to sustainable

Over time, the idea of going slow has trickled down to different areas and industries. Nowadays, the slow movement can be seen in the world of food, fashion, and even travel. Post-pandemic, even the landscape of work as we know it is gradually changing to embrace a slower pace than the typical 9-5.

It was only right that the idea of “conscious living” eventually became popular. Living consciously means putting more thought into actions and choices. It affects every decision we make from the moment we wake up to the moment we take a slumber. Naturally, living consciously also meant acknowledging the impact of our choices on other people and on the world we live in.

Thus, we eventually put more thought into how we make things or how our purchases affect the planet. We started thinking better, doing better, and acting better – all for the common good.

So is there any real difference between these buzzwords?

We believe that all of these concepts are intertwined: without one, the other would be questionable or it may even cease to exist. To live slowly meant to live sustainably. To live consciously meant to live with and for the common good.

A new wave of conscious consumers

Choosing to buy or not to buy based on a product or brand’s societal and environmental impact is a perfect example of conscious consumerism. With a growing number of millennials and the majority of Gen Z’s choosing to vote with their dollars, It’s no question that conscious consumerism, and even conscious living, is here to stay. It’s no longer a trend but a shift in our way of living.

Here are some of our personal tips on how to start living more consciously:

  1. Research, deliberate, and decide.

A conscious girlie is an informed girlie! Do your own diligence and find out how products are made and what impact it has. More and more brands are becoming more transparent about their methods however, it’s always best to exercise some caution to avoid greenwashing and misinformation.

Our product pages are filled with useful information to help you decide if a product is right for you. We are constantly improving our platform and we hope that, in the future, we are able to provide a more cohesive resource for you to make more informed choices.

  1. Start small.

The idea of living more mindfully is great but with how fast-paced our generation is, sometimes it can be tough to slow down. Find small and simple ways for you to get started instead of transforming your entire lifestyle overnight.

Our founder, Joyce, (and our team, too!) admits that we don’t live 100% sustainably– but who does?! What we do is identify different habits and choices we can continually implement in our day to day. Little green steps can go a long way.

  1. Shop small, shop slow.

Because of the lean value chain, often the smaller brands have a more transparent and clearer means of reporting their impact compared to larger corporations that work with a variety of suppliers all around the world. It is for this reason that we recommend supporting small businesses that uphold environmentally friendly and ethical business practices whilst choosing to preserve and champion traditions & cultures.

We are committed to making living consciously easier for you which is why we have brought together an amazing group of purposeful brands together in one platform. Discover the brands with a heart that we love at LOOQAL. .
