Relax and Unwind: 5 Self-Care Ideas to Incorporate Into Your Daily Routine

The hustle and bustle of everyday life in the city may cause stress and anxiety for some people. It’s easy to get pulled into different directions when your task list never ends. Here at LOOQAL, we’re avid believers in living consciously. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we live stress-free lives. For us, cultivating everyday routines that positively impact our mental health and overall wellbeing is key to living a happy, healthy, and fulfilled life.

Practice everyday self-care with these easy tips:

Start the day with movement

Apart from boosting your mood and combating stress, incorporating a quick run, going for a morning walk in the park, doing a 10-minute stretch, or joining a sunrise yoga class wakes your body and energises you for the day. The first thing we typically grab in the morning is a cup of coffee and whilst it does fuel us for the day, the effects are only temporary. Introducing movement to our daily routine has longer lasting effects to our mind and body.

Enjoy a few moments of mindfulness

From taking a short stroll in the neighbourhood, noticing the different tasting notes of your cup of coffee, to sitting in silence and just being, the practice of mindfulness can do wonders for our nervous system. Meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part that is in charge of conserving our energy and slowing down our heart rate, leaving us feeling calm and relaxed. Fun fact: meditation does not always have to be done sitting or lying down.

Light some incense and let it gently envelop the room as you meditate.

Create a calm environment that you can keep coming back to every time you feel overwhelmed

Our environment affects our mood so much so that even a small disruption can potentially ruin our outlook for the day. Carving out a space in your home or office where you can go back to for some much needed rest and relaxation away from the worries of the day can do wonders for your mental wellbeing.

If there’s no room for such a sanctuary, attending a yin yoga class, going for a long shower, or forest bathing are other alternatives.

Develop an attitude for gratitude

Based on the concepts of Law of Attraction and Positive Psychology, writing down things that we are grateful for can further increase our happiness. Focus on the good things that happened to us can boost our self-esteem and confidence which further positively impacts our health. Our favourite way to practice this is by writing the three things we’re grateful for that happened in our day in our trusty journal. To encourage silence and introspection, lighting up an aromatic soy wax candle before jotting down your thoughts can be therapeutic.

End the day with a skincare ritual

Long day? Having a wind down routine that signals you are done for the day can help train your body to know that it’s time for bed. A typical sleep ritual involves staying away from your devices at least 30 minutes before bed, taking a long bath, and reading a book. Adding in your favourite skincare ritual further sets the tone, allowing you to snooze faster and sleep better.

Opt for clean skincare that’s good for your skin and good for the planet.
